Eighteen-year-old Alexander Sean Kamar timed one hour and seven minutes to win Inter-Conservancy Moran’s Half Marathon held Thursday in Isiolo County.

Kamar triumphed in the race that brought together 100 morans from warring communities in five northern Kenya counties and which was aimed at promoting peaceful co-existence.

The runners from 16 community conservancies under the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) competed in 21km race dubbed ‘Inter-conservancy Moran’s Marathon.’ Participants were drawn from Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Laikipia and West Pokot counties.

The race was organised by NRT and supported by Danish International Development Assistance (Danida).

The top 10 finishers from the race were selected to form the NRT moran’s team that will represent the wildlife conservancy organization in Safaricom Lewa Marathon set for June 30.

The 21km race started at Kiwanja area in Ngaremara Ward and ended at the Kenya Wildlife Complex headquarters on the eastern bank of Ewaso Ng’iro River.

“The arid areas of Northern Kenya have suffered effects of climate change. Increasingly, frequent and severe drought places undue hardship and conflict over resources. By creating platform and open spaces for dialogue based on common values and team work, we can mitigate future conflict while promoting cohesion and partnerships,” said NRT’s CEO Tom Lalampaa.

He said the marathon was part of sport-for-peace events aimed at promoting reconciliation among communities in the region.

Danish Ambassador to Kenya Mette Knudsen said NRT and the community conservancies have helped address wildlife poaching and insecurity in northern Kenya as well as providing a framework for conflict resolution.
