Hospitality operators are lamenting that “there are more police officers than patrons” in the entertainment district of Surfers Paradise. Police patrols have intensified with no incidents reported so far. Operators, hoping to see trade pick up as the games progress, are employing desperate measures for their businesses to gather momentum, such as lowering hotel prices.

For instance, beachfront hotel prices are being slashed with officials confident that with the good weather, the crowds will eventually build up.

Rakesh Kumar Sharma, 46, was arrested at the Brisbane International Airport for sneaking in a “media contingent” of eight after allegedly being paid 1,000 Australian dollars for each of the illegal arrivals. The “journalists” turned out to be farmers.
