IOC now send top officials to Nock meeting

The International Olympic Committee and Association (IOC) of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) have now opted to send officials to oversee the National Olympic Committee of Kenya’s General Assembly next Tuesday in Nairobi.

Jerome Poivey, the head of institutional relations and governance at the IOC, and Mohamed Azzoug, Anoca President’s chief of staff, will attend, as observers, the meeting at which the IOC said Nock must adopt a new constitution.

In a letter dated March 3, 2017 and signed by IOC deputy director general Pere Miro and Anoca President Lassana Palenfo, Nock have been told they must co-operate with the two officials in order to accomplish their mission “in the best possible conditions.”

The General Assembly, that was initially called last Tuesday, ended prematurely when Nock President Kipchoge Keino called it off after member associations and the Olympics body failed to agree on several components in the draft constitution.

Nock affiliates then protested to IOC over what they said were schemes by current Nock executive “to go to the election under the current constitution.”

Should Tuesday’s meeting fail to proceed as expected, IOC warned that Kenya will be reported at the next IOC Executive Board meeting, which will take place on March 16-17 for review and appropriate action.

IOC further warned Kipchoge and Paul and Nock affiliates to abstain from circulating any further counter-productive communications on the past situation or threats of future legal action between themselves, which do not contribute to pacifying the situation.
