Kipkorir eyes success in Lagos Marathon

What you need to know:

  • The 2011 Boston Marathon Caroline Cheptanui Kilel will battle Georgina Rono, Risper Kimayo among others in the women's race.
  • Last year, it was a clean sweep for the Ethiopian athletes where Ayelu Hordofa led her compatriots, Tigist Girma and Guta Herpha to seal the podium positions.

Fresh from winning last December's Standard Chartered Marathon in Singapore, Kenya's Joshua Kipkorir will be seeking another title when he lines up for the Lagos Marathon in Nigeria on Saturday.

The IAAF label race has attracted a number of athletes among them Kipkorir's brother, Ronny Kiboss, Patrick Terer, Moses Kigen Kipkosgei among others.

Kipkorir went down the history books when he led his compatriots in a clean sweep for the first 17 positions in Singapore.

It was a clean sweep for Kenyans in the race last year as Kiprotich Kiroi, Ronny Kiboss and Peter Benjamin emerged in first, second and third places respectively.

According to the athlete, who has been training in Kaptagat, preparations went on well and he will be seeking to win the race and retain the title won by Kenya last year.

“I have prepared well for the race and I will be seeking to improve my time and also better my position after emerging fourth in the 2017 edition,” said Kipkorir.

He said that he had little time to prepare after winning the Singapore Marathon and he will be using the same tricks which he hopes will work for him.

“I know the race will be very much competitive, but I will use the same tactic that I used in Singapore which I hope will work for me,” said the soft-spoken athlete.

He believes that the training he did with his brother will help them during the race as they eye top positions.

“It won’t be easy for us but we will be eyeing podium finishes in the race. We shall run as a team up to the 30km mark and thereafter we will try and see how to win the race by increasing the pace,” Kipkorir told Nation Sport.

The athlete has trained with the world beaters like Amsterdam Marathon champion Lawrence Cherono, Dubai Marathon champion Cosmas Lagat among others.
