Eldoret's Elisha Kiprop finally cracked the right code to win the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on his third appearance on Sunday.

Newcomer Josephine Chepkoech won the women's marathon.

Kiprop, who finished fifth in 2011 and second in 2014, clocked 2 hours, 14 minutes and 19 seconds for his maiden victory.

Kiprop edged out Julius Kiprono from Nandi in 2:15:01 and Patrick Cheruiyot in 2:15:09 to second and third places respectively.

Chepkoech timed 2:33:11, beating Cynthia Jerop to second place in 2:34:12 as Joy Kemuma clocked 2:34:53 for third place.

However, chaotic scenes marked both the start and finish of the races.

The narrow processional way at Uhutu Park made things difficult as journalists literary battled to snatch away the athletes from rude officials to get interviews.
