Lotto boost for Baringo Half Marathon

What you need to know:

  • Winners of the half marathon race will take home Sh200,000 each while the winner of the 10-kilometre race will pocket Sh50,000 and the junior race winner bag Sh10,000.

This year’s edition of the Baringo Half Marathon has received an increased sponsorship boost of Sh5 million from the Lotto Foundation, an increase from the Sh4 million given by the lottery company for the annual race last year.

Lotto, are title sponsors for the second year running with this year’s race set for November 4 and featuring the flagship 21-kilometre race, a six-kilometre junior cross country race and 10-kilometre road race open to individuals and corporates.

The course has slightly changed with the starting point around Timboiywo and the finish at Kabarnet. Speaking at the launch of this year’s race yesterday in Nairobi, Barnaba Kitilit, the chairman of Athletics Kenya’s Baringo sub-branch, said the race has helped nurture upcoming talent.

Lotto Foundation chairman Brian Waluchio commended the race organisers.

“We take the renewal of this partnership with great pride for it gives us the assurance for continuity and it aligns with our long term plans to continue contributing positively to the world of sports and community development in the country,” he noted.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya President Paul Tergat, who is the race patron, confirmed that this year’s race will see the revival of the exchange programme between Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes.

“This year, we will be have two Ethiopians participating in the Baringo Half Marathon 2017 and two Kenyans participate in the Ethiopian Great Run in a bid to give our athletes the exposure and experience,” Tergat said.
