Mark Kiptoo is the new world marathon record holder for veteran male athletes aged above 40 years (M40) after completing Frankfurt Marathon in 2:07:50 last Sunday.

Kiptoo, 42, shaved off 48 seconds from compatriot Kenneth Mung’ara's record of 2:08:38 after finishing sixth behind winner Kelkile Gezahegne from Ethiopia (2:06:37) and fellow Kenyans Martin Kosgey (2:06:41), Alex Kibet (2:07:09), Amos Mitei (2:07:28) and Kenneth Keter (2:07:34).

The 2012 African 5,000 metres champion - who also won the 12 and a half lap race at the 2007 and 2011 World Military Games in Hyderabad, India and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - shattered Mung’ara’s record which had stood since April 3, 2016.

Three-time Gold Coast Airport Marathon champion Mung’ara clocked 2:08:38 in the 2016 Milan Marathon when he was 42 years, 209 days.

Since 2015, the Masters M40 marathon world record has been in Kenya's hands. Mung’ara broke the world record held of 2:08:46 held by Mexico's Andres Espinosa when he won the 2015 Milan Marathon in 2:08:44 on April 12.

He bettered his own record to 2:08:42 in Gold Coast in Australia on July 5, 2015 before achieving 2:08:38 in Milan.
