Mokamba, Fresha called up to Africa squad

What you need to know:

  • Mokamba, a former 100m national record holder and champion, didn’t take part in the National Championships-cum-Africa trials last month.
  • He will team up with Peter Mwai of Police in 200m. Mwangi, a Kenya Police corporal, finished third in the 100m behind compatriots Joan Cherono and Eunice Kadogo.

Sprinters Mike Mokamba and Fresha Mwangi have been included in Kenya’s team to the Africa Senior Athletics Championships to be held from August 1 to 5 in Asana, Nigeria.

Mokamba, who will compete in 200 metres and 4x100m relay, will be making his second appearance entrance on the continental event, having reached the semi-final on 200m in 2016 when Durban hosted the Africa meet.

Mwangi, who also made her continental debut in 2016, also reaching the semi-finals, will feature in 100m and 4x100m relay.

Mokamba, 23, and Mwangi, 26, got down to business with the rest of the team that started residential training at Kasarani Monday.

The team, that comprises 64 athletes, is based at The Luke Hotel in Ruaraka.
