Mutahi triumphs at Nyanza North region x-country

Cyrus Mutahi of Kisumu produced some superlative running to win the Nyanza North Region Cross Country 10km senior men’s race at Kisumu Polytechnic on Saturday. 

The 24-year-old runner was in fine form leading from start to finish in 31 minutes 20 seconds.

His nearest rival was county mate Robert Saoyo who finished a distant second in 32:36 while Ezekiel Oduol from Siaya was third in 34:23.

“The corners were so many and they kept on slowing my pace. My focus now is shifts to fighting for a slot in Team Kenya at the national trials,” said the victorious Mutahi.

Joyce Jebet of Kisumu won the 10km senior women’s race in a slow time of 53:57:39. She was closely followed home by Margarete Adogo of Siaya who clocked 53:57:78 while Anasthalia Awuor of Kisumu was third in 1hour, 17minutes and 36 seconds.

In the men’s 8km junior race, John Ochieng of Siaya unleashed a late kick to win in 26:59, ahead of Levy Oduor of Kisumu who clocked 27:33 while Joash Ruto of Homa Bay finished third in 27:33.

The women’s junior 6km affair went to Viola Chengweno from Homa Bay who crossed the finish line in 22:01, with Naomi Chepkorir and Pamela Atieno of Homa Bay and Kisumu finish second and third respectively in 22:49 and 23:31.

The race attracted athletes from three counties - Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay.

Meanwhile, Joseph Koech and Sheila Nyambura won the senior men and women’s races of the Nyanza South regional cross country on Friday. Athletes from Kisii County dominated the event.
