National champ Anyango lights up Moi Stadium

As expected, National Secondary Schools Games 100m girls champion Beatrice Anyango on Saturday triumphed at the Nyanza Regional track and field athletics junior championships held at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

But the form three student at Kowuor Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County only managed a slow 13.01 secs, compared to the 11:95 secs that she clocked during Term One Secondary Schools’ competition which was held in Embu in April.

Everlyne Awuor, also of Homa Bay, timed 13:06 seconds for second place while Ivy Awuor came a distance third in 14:00seconds.

"I expected to win and now I am looking forward to improve on my time at the trials in Nairobi. I don't want to lose focus because competition will be stiff at the national level,” said Anyango.

Little-known Ben Ogweno of Homa Bay produced a dazzling performance in the boys’ 100m, winning in 10.09 secs, ahead of Steven Oluoch and Steven Onyango - who clocked 11.02secs and 11:05secs respectively.

Derrick Tindo denied Ronny Onyango victory at the tape in the boys’ 800m. Tindo won in 2 minutes and 5 seconds leaving Onyango to settle for second place in 2:08 as James Otieno wound third in 2:10.

Tindo was not done yet as he again produced a spectacular performance in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 4:21, as Maxwell Alelo (second) and Ventone Oduor (third) timed 4:45 and 4:52 respectively.

The girls’ 800m saw only two athletes take to the track, a situation which was also witnessed in the 1500m where only one runner showed up for the race.

Emily Achieng won the 800m girls after leading from gun to tape, clocking 2:42 while Melody Atieno crossed the finish line in 2.44.

Merceline Ochieng, who was the only athlete in the 1500m, crossed the finish line in 5mins and 34 seconds.

In the field events, Felix Otieno emerged the winner in discuss boys with a throw of 25.24m while the girls’ title went to Belinda Oburu who managed a throw of 25:28m.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza North used the championship to select athletes who will participate in the national trials for the IAAF World Under-20 Championships set for July in Finland. The trials will be held in Nairobi next week.
