Obiri triumphs in Shanghai Diamond League

Kenya’s Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri launched her season with an empathic victory in women’s 5,000m race in Shanghai on Saturday.

Obiri waded off a challenge from Ethiopian Senbere Teferi with three laps to go before running the last two laps alone to triumph in a World Lead time of 14:22:48.

Obiri, the 2013 World 1,500m silver medallist, edged out Teferi and her compatriot Letesenbet Gidey to second and third places in 14:31.76 and 14:36.84 respectively.

African Games 5,000m champion Margaret Chelimo from Kenya was fourth in 14:45.95.
