Philadelphia 21km champ wants Madoka title back

Philadelphia Half Marathon champion Panuel Mkungo is out to recapture the Safaricom Madoka Half Marathon title when the race is held on Mashujaa Day (October 20) at Ngerenyi in Wundanyi, Taita Taiveta County.

Mkungo, who won the race title years ago, is among 300 elite athletes who have registered for the race where the men’s and women’s winners will pocket Sh500,000 each.

Speaking on Wednesday at Riadha House where the organisers received Sh5.2 million from several partners including title sponsors Safaricom, Athletics Kenya Coast region chairman Dimmy Kisalu disclosed that they expect over 3,000 participants.

“We have received an entry for 1,500 participants so far, 300 of them elite,” said Kisalu.

RACE FOUNDER

Kisalu was accompanied by the race founder Marsden Madoka, his wife Elizabeth and Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei.

Kisalu said, besides the half marathon race where Sh2.4 has been set aside for prize money, there will be 11 other races, namely: 400m for under-seven years, 4km for under-14s, junior women’s 6km, junior men’s 8km and men’s and women’s 10km races.

A five-kilometre race for veterans aged 45 to 50 years and will also be held.
