Debutant Kiprop announces grand entry at AK meet

Debutant Qualyne Kiprop of Torongo Club sped to a thrilling victory in 10,000m women on the final day of the first Athletics Kenya track and field meeting at Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri on Saturday.

The former 1,500m runner showed her resilience in the 10,000m race ensconced in the leading pack before breaking away to win in 33.10.06.

Caroline Nyaga of Kigari crossed the white line in 33.12.7 in second position as Jackline Chebwogeri followed in third place in 33.22.1.

“I had faith that I would win. I decided to move with the pace of the leading pack as I monitored their speed and strength, but I knew I was good in the final kick,” said Kiprop. The race was not as tough as I thought. I had prepared well and my body is in top form. I am looking forward to making it to the national team to the All African Games,” added Kiprop.

In 5,000m men, Simon Njuguna of Lanet posted the best time of 13.49.8 after three heats in the event that registered the highest number of runners.

Letaya Simon posted 13.50.1 to be ranked second while Robert Kiprop (13.50.5), Cooper Land’s Moses Njoroge (13.53.9) and Peter Kamau (13.57.6) following in that order.

Africa 20km race walk champion Samuel Gathimba started his campaign to the Morocco All African Games on a high gear after he won men’s 10,000m.
