For the first ever, Tana River County will have representation in the Coast Region Cross Country Championship to be held at Kijiwetanga Primary School in Malindi on February 16.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) Coast branch secretary Felix Ngala, they have been assured by the Tana River County Sports Executive has that the county will have a full team at the coastal meet.

“We’re happy that for the first time ever, all six Coast counties will take part in this annual event to select Coast Region team for the National Cross Country Championship to be held in Eldoret on February 23,” said Ngala.

He said the Coast squad for the national event will include 30 athletes and five officials to be selected after the Malindi regional championship.

All six counties will on Saturday hold their inter- constituencies cross-country championships ahead of the regional event in Malindi a week later.

Taita-Taveta County will hold its event at Wundanyi’s Danson Mwanyumba Stadium, Kwale County at Ukunda ground, Mombasa County at Mama Ngina Drive, Tana River County at Hola ground, Lamu County at Horohoro ground and Kilifi in Malindi at Kijiwetanga Primary ground.

Taita Taveta County has dominated Coast Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships as their high altitude gives them an edge from sea level counties. They are also well prepared as its political leadership ensures that team holds training camps ahead of the championships. They are also well motivated, kitten and get hefty allowances.
