Kosgei lights up Mumias at 5th AK meet

Vincent Kosgei returned to winnings ways flooring William Mbevi to win the men’s 400m hurdles final during the fifth Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meet at Mumias Sugar Sports Complex on Friday.

Kosgei, who represented Kenya at the 2012 London Olympics, clocked 52.4 seconds to win as his teammate from Kenya Prisons finished second in 54.6.

Gideon Muchoge from Kisii beat Mbevi in a photo finish for third place with each timing 54.9.

Mbevi, the Kenya Defence Forces officer, is fresh from Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where he failed to reach the 400m hurdles final. His compatriots, 2015 World 400m hurdles champion Nicholas Bett and his brother Aron Koech made the final in Gold Coast.

Jane Chege, who finished fifth in 400m hurdles during the 2016 Africa Championships in South Africa, won women’s race in 63.6, beating Gladys Ngure (Prisons) 64.8 and Naomi Chelangat (Kapsabet) 66.4.

Youngster Roselinda Jepketer, who represented Kenya at the Africa Cross Country Championships in Algeria in March, clocked 35:35.6 to win women’s 10,000m final.

Jepketer, a Form Three student at Kapsangari Secondary School in West Pokot County, defeated Beatrice Begi (Nandi) 35:43.02. Leonida Mosop of Kenya Navy settled third in 35:47.06. “It is my first time to win in such a big event. I am hopeful to perform well in subsequent events,” said Jepketer, who finished fifth in women’s Under-20 at the Africa Cross Country Championships.

Samuel Chioboli from Global clocked 13:55.6 to win men’s 5,000m final, beating Josphat Kipchirichir and Simon Leteya to second and third places in 13:5.6 and 13:55.9 respectively.

At the same time, Justus Soget, who won the 3,000m at IAAF Muller World Indoor Grand prix meeting in Glasgow in March, 2014 World Under-20 1,500m champion Jonathan Sawe and Albert Rop from Bahrain, won their respective heats to storm into Saturday’s 1,500m final.

Soget timed 3:45.5 to win his heat, beating Kipkemboi Lagat and Kelvin Kipchumba in 3:46.1 and 3:48.1 to all qualify. Sawe timed 3:48.2.

Kenya’s  2017 World Under-18 representative  Gloria Mulei scaled 5.78 metres to win women’s long jump while Roselyne Rakama claimed women’s discuss title with a throw of 46.20m.
