Western top medal table as KTTC championships end

Western topped the medal table with a haul of 40 as the Kenya Teachers Training College National Athletics Championships came to a close on Thursday at Tambach, Elgeyo Marakwet.
Western won 20 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals. Rift Valley were second on the medal table with 48 medals (13 gold, 20 silver, 15 bronze) and Eastern a distant third with 180 medals (6 gold, five silver, four bronze).
Stephen Nkaiwatei, Emmy Chemutai and Winnie Awuor bagged four gold medals for Eastern, Rift Valley and Nyanza Regions respectively on the final day.
Kigari’s Nkaiwatei stole the show in 3,000m steeplechase to add to his brilliant gold in 1,500m and 5,000m on Tuesday and closed the games with another gold in 10,000m.
The impressive Nkaiwatei won all races he competed in.
Nkaiwatei beat 10,000m defending champion Wycliffe Kupar to second position on the home stretch to cross the finish line in 30:52.1 for his fourth gold.
Kupar from Eregi, silver medallist in 5,000m, again played second fiddle to Nkaiwatei finishing second in 30:52.2 as Mailu Nyamai timed 32:08.2 for third place.
Chemutai won four gold medals for Rift Valley in the championships.
Running for Mosoriot, she won 10,000m on Tuesday, 1,500m a day later before wrapping up a brilliant outing with victories in 800m and 5,000m.
In 5,000m race, she timed 18:47.8 ahead of Tambach’s Fancy Chesang who clocked 19:11.5 for second place and Mosoriot’s Lucy Chepkirui who finished was third in 19:23.8.
In 800m women category, Chemutai won in 2:31.2 ahead of her college mate Lilian Chepchirchir who timed 2:34.4 while Faith Yator was third in 2:36.7.
“I want to start training seriously because I have seen my capability,” said Chemutai.
In the men’s 800m, Darsisus Kimutai from Mosoriot emerged victorious after clocking 1:56.2 beating Kaimosi’s Naeku Kalool (1:57.2) into second place and Geoffrey Kimaiyo (1:57.3.) from Egoji in third.
In T11 category for the visually impaired category, Awuor won in 800m, 400m, 200m and 100m respectively.
The Asumbi runner, guided by Eunice Ntabo won all her races, opening with 800m, 400m, 200m and winded with her final gold in 100m.Rift Valley emerged top after bagging 48 medals ahead of Western who got 40 medals while Eastern settled for third position with 18 medals.
