Young Bett tops at Nairobi meet

Saturday June 19 2010

World Junior 10,000m champion Josephat Bett signalled his intention having graduated to the senior cadre when he easily won in his speciality during Saturday’s Athletics Kenya Nairobi branch championship staged at Nyayo National Stadium.

Bett struck two birds with one stone as he won the race and set one of the fastest time on the Nyayo Stadium track of 28:47.8 to hit the qualifying time for the national championships which are due next week.

However, Bett’s time was below the 28.38.00 qualifying mark for the Senior Africa Athletics championship, which is due at the same venue from July 28 to August 1. Bett edged out Vincent Rono 28:48.0 and Chris Ruto 28:52.3.

In the women race, Alice Kemunto ran against time and was the winner as she got what she was eying, the qualifying mark for the Senior Africa athletics Championship.

Kemunto posted a faster time of 34:50.5 to see her hopes of making it to the national team realised.

Seasoned athletes

The African mark is set at 35.20.00 and now she has a small matter of beating other seasoned athletes in the national trials next week to seal her place in the Kenya team.

Kemunto beat Zeddy Chepkoech 36:08.1 to the second place while Maryann Kigura settled for the third slot in 37:36.7.

Virginia Bosibori was the fastest in the women 400m hurdles, but her time confirmed her novice state in the event as she clocked 71.5 with Victoria Mumbua coming in second in 72.1 while Celestine Makori 77.9 was third.

They were all eying to clock the required 59.5. In the men 5,000m race Karanja Muturi beat Peterson Wachira. Muturi clocked 13:55.1
