KPA teams to launch league title defence on Saturday

  • Also playing this weekend are Ulinzi Warriors, who play newcomers Kisumu Lakeside on Sunday, while Equity Bank women, who finished second last season, take on Zetech University.

Champions Kenya Ports Authority men and women’s teams start their title defence in their respective National Classic Basketball League matches in Nairobi this weekend against modest opposition.

This season’s matches throw off at different venues on Saturday.

KPA women swept aside Equity Bank on a 3-0 basis in the play-offs early this year, while  KPA men defeated Strathmore University students 3-1 in the play-offs.

KPA women play league newcomers Masaku Sparks at the United States International University- Africa (USIU) grounds in Nairobi on Saturday and Sunday.

According to match programme released by  KBF Fixtures Secretary Joseph Amoko, KPA women take on Masaku Sparks, who have been readmitted to the league after a season in the lower-tier competition, and Footprints on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Former international basketball star Cynthia Mumbo has been appointed to head a five-man marketing committee tasked with helping Kenya Basketball Federation identify partners to help it improve talent development and performance.

KBF treasurer Peter Orero said the federation is determined to change how it is managed and has tasked the committee to ensure the goal is achieved.

Other members of the committee include  Mitchel Otinda, Angela Luchivya, Michael Murithi and Mwange J Mung’au. The team’s main role is to look for sponsors for this year’s National Classic Basketball League.

KBF’s Annual General Meeting attended by KBF top brass, including chairman Paul Otula  and secretary Vitalis Gode, resolved that there will be no changes to league fixtures.

The meeting decided the league would run from May 5 to October 7.
