Kenya women cruise in Rwandan T20 cricket tourney

  • In the opening day of the tournament, Kenya (107 for 4 in 15.4 overs) beat familiar foes Uganda (104 for 9 in 20 overs)  by six wickets.
  • It was a bad day for Uganda (81 for 8 in 20 overs) as they lost to Rwanda (82 for 4 in 19.4 overs) by six wickets.

Kenya won their second Kwibika Cricket for Peace Women’s Twenty20 game on Friday when they beat hosts Rwanda by five wickets at Gahanga Cricket Oval, Kigali.

Batting first, Rwanda were set a target of 87 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Sarah Owera (21 off 40 balls with two boundaries) top scored for her side.

Diane Bimenyimana (15 off 23 balls with a boundary), Veronique Iriho (14 off 20 balls)   and I. Alice (11 off 15 balls with a four) were the only Rwandan batsmen who posted double digit figures on the scoreboard.

Kenya’s wicket takers were Daisy Wairimu (1/2), Margaret Banja (1/16) and Queentor Abel (1/15).

In reply, Kenya was home and dry, 87 with five wickets and 29 balls in hand.

Mary Wambui was Kenya’s highest runs getter, 22 off 26 balls with three boundaries. Esther Wangari (19 off 24 balls with a boundary) and Daisy Wairimu, unbeaten on 12 off 10 balls with a boundary, were Kenya’s top scores.

Iriho was Rwanda’s highest wicket taker with three for 18. Bimenyimana (2/16) was the other wicket taker.

Curtains for the tournament in remembrance of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda will come down on Saturday.
