The Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for Saturday has been called off.
The NPCA secretary, Charles Nyaberi, Wednesday said that the AGM was cancelled to pave way for the presentation of the newly drafted Cricket Kenya (CK) constitution to the stakeholders for approval.
However, things do not look rosy in NPCA as it appears the association has been shunned by the majority of their affiliated clubs. The clubs are competing in an Invitational Twenty20 league that is sponsored by Hirani Telcoms.
One member of the clubs taking part in the league, who sought anonymity since he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the clubs said: “We are not interested in politics. Let NPCA do their politics as we keep our boys busy playing the game.”
He added: “After the Twenty20 tournament we are going to compete in 50-over matches and we are hopeful that we will get a sponsor.”
Sponsors ceased supporting NPCA events a long time ago. Meanwhile, the standard of the game has fallen to its lowest ebb compared to the 1990s when both batsmen and bowlers shone with bat and ball respectively.
When NPCA league was at its zenith in 1990s, the former Kenya’s national team captain and prolific batsman, Steve Tikolo - who is currently Uganda’s national team coach - set a batting record of 1,950 runs in 1995.
At the national level things are no better. The current CK executive committee, that came on board in May for a period of one year, suspended operations in June.
CK, led by chairlady Jackie Janmohamed sent most of their employees as well as coaches on indefinite and unpaid leave.
