Kamande yet to name squad to World Cup qualifiers

What you need to know:

  • Africa Division One World Cup qualifiers will take place in Namibia in February.
  • Cricket Kenya’s programmes were suspended in June.
  • Under-19 World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2020.

Kenya is yet to name its under-19 squad that will compete in the Africa Division One World Cup qualifiers set for Namibia in February next year.

Kenya is among six teams set to battle it out for Africa’s sole ticket to the world youth championships to be in 2020 in South Africa. The other teams invited for the qualifiers are Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and hosts Namibia.

Kenya under-19 coach Jimmy Kamande said that he’s yet to name his team as Cricket Kenya’s programmes were suspended in June. “It took me at least 18 months to come with the team that qualified for World Cup in New Zealand last year. I walked around clubs watching youngsters in action as well as scouting in school league matches,” he said.

Kamande said that he invited the selected boys for trials in Mombasa and Nakuru and later held a 10-day residential training camp ahead of last year’s championships. “As things stand who will want to go to Namibia and look bad?” he posed.

Operations at Cricket Kenya ground to a halt after it’s treasurer Ravi Kaul quit in August this year. Vice chairman Harpar Singh is the only elected board member remaining at the wrangle-hit association.

Harpar told Nation Sport that he was hopeful that the warring factions will sit down and resolve their issues for the sake of the game.
