Kakamega Homeboyz defeated Chemelil Sugar 2-0 in a Kenyan Premier League match at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega on Sunday.

Veteran striker Allan Wanga handed the hosts the opener in the 39th minute via a header, while second half substitute Kikoyo Hassan sealed the fate of the Sugar Millers in the 78th minute.

It was Wanga’s second consecutive goal after coming back from a three-week injury spell. Last Wednesday, he scored the second goal against Gor Mahia FC at the same venue in their 3-2 loss.

On Sunday, Wanga could have put the hosts in the lead after four minutes into the match after he outsprinted defender Nicholas Akoko only to shoot over the cross bar.

The sugar millers mounted a counter attack which saw Bliss Kityo outplay James Situma to the ball only to shoot in the hands of advancing custodian John Waw.

Wanga headed home the opener in the 39th minute to enable Homeboyz lead 1-0 at the breather.

Upon the resumption, Homeboyz attackers Noah Wafula, Wanga and Ali Bai came out guns blazing but they were well contained by the Chemelil backline marshalled by Benjamin Oketch.

The sugar milers could have equalised in the 52nd minute when Jacob Odhiambo dribbled past Situma but his shot was punched out by Homeboyz custodian Michael Wanyika.

Chemelil’s Nicholas Akoko was booked in after he fouled Esiye Estone in the 57th minute.

Chemelil Coach Charles Odera made two substitutions with the hope of salvaging the contest.

He brought in Kelvin Olouch and Charles Khwakha, who replaced Peter Amani and Faraj Ominde in the 52nd and 55th minutes respectively.

Kakamega Homeboyz tactician Mike Mururi withdrew Noah Wafula and brought in Kikoyo Hassan in the 60th minute.

As the match headed to full time, Homeboyz’s Hassan beat the offside trap to score the second goal in the 78th minute.

Mururi expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the match.

“The match was tough. But we shall strive to maintain the winning momentum into our next fixtures,” he noted.

Chemelil tactician Odera said his attackers created many scoring chances but their finishing let them down.

“The defeat shall not dampen our fighting spirit as we shall rectify the mistakes made on the field,” he observed.
