Champs Gor Mahia advance to SportPesa Super Cup final

Champions Gor Mahia advanced to the finals of the SportPesa Super Cup after a 2-0 win over Singida United of Tanzania at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru, on Thursday.

A brace from Rwandese striker Meddie Kagere helped K'Ogalo to secure their place in Sunday's final against another Tanzanian club Simba, who earlier beat Kakamega Homeboyz 5-4 on post-match penalties.

The winner of the second edition of the competition will pocket Sh3 million and book a date with English Premier League side Everton at Goodison Park in England next month.

Kagere started the goal rush when he soared high inside the danger zone to head home past Singida goalkeeper Peter Junior Mnyika in the 35th minute for a 1-0 half time lead.

In the second half, Kagere sealed Singida's fate a minute to the final whistle, when he unleashed a powerful volley past Mnyika.

Kagere has now scored three goals in the tournament same as Allan Wanga of Homeboyz.

“It was a physical game and Gor appeared to be physically fit. However, the pitch was horrible and reduced our running and chances of scoring goals,” said Singida coach Suleiman Hemed

Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr said his men were impressive and played one of their best matches this season and in the tournament.

“It was a brilliant flow of football. Every department was fantastic and I am happy we shall meet Simba in the final,” said Kerr, who is a former Simba coach.

Gor Mahia took command of the game right from the start and seemed to master the waterlogged Afraha Stadium surface as a result of the the heavy rains that pounded Nakuru Town.

George “Blackberry ”Odhiambo came close to opening the account eight minutes into the game for K'Ogalo, but his curving shot sailed over the cross bar.

Godfrey Walusimbi, who had a brilliant day in office, also missed a sitter moments later when his rising shot went off target by inches.
