Football Kenya Federation on Thursday released a Sh12 million grant to the clubs set to compete in this season's Women Premier League.

Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony in Nairobi, FKF President Nick Mwendwa said this development was in tandem with Fifa's requirement to improve the standards of the women's game.

"We have already professionalised both the running and management of both the women’s Premier League and Division One Leagues. This is just a start and I am certain several partners will soon be lining up to support you," said Mwendwa.

Each of the 16 teams taking part in the league this year will pocket Sh750,000, an amount that will be channelled towards purchase of training kits plus travel expenses.

“The funds couldn't have come at a better time. I assure you this is a welcome relief and a timely motivation not only to my team, but all the players," Vihiga Queens title-winning coach Alex Alumira said.

Mwendwa also said the federation will continue to cater for the other match day expenses namely lease of match venues, security and ambulance services.

Thika Queens currently lead the 16-team women standings having amassed maximum points from four matches.

From finishing second at the Cecafa Women Championship two years ago to securing qualification to the Africa Women Cup of Nation the same year, the national women team has provided a majority of the positive highlights witnessed in the country in recent times.
