Ouna's KCB aim to complete the double over Gor Mahia

What you need to know:

  • KCB are 12th on the log with 30 points after 26 games.
  • “I think every game has its own life, we beat Gor in the first leg, but I can’t stand here and say we will stop again, I have to show respect to them,” noted Ouna, who won back-to-back league titles with Gor as an assistant coach.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) are wary of the threat posed by SportPesa Premier League (SPL) champions Gor Mahia ahead of their encounter on Thursday evening at Kenyatta stadium in Machakos.

The bankers coach Frank Ouna, whose charges edged out K’Ogalo 1-0 in a hot-tempered first leg at the same venue in January, wishes to repeat the same feat to end their five-match winless run.

The match was however marred with a 15-minute stoppage after a section of irate Gor fans hurled objects onto the pitch protesting a throw in awarded against them.

Gor were fined Sh606,000 for the damages on the KCB bus, two stadium ambulances and a section of the perimeter fence.

KCB are 12th on the log with 30 points after 26 games.

“I think every game has its own life, we beat Gor in the first leg, but I can’t stand here and say we will stop again, I have to show respect to them,” noted Ouna, who won back-to-back league titles with Gor as an assistant coach.

“They are the best team in the league and the current champions, but we will give our best. Our main undoing has been lack of converting our chances but now we had more training sessions to try and rectify some of these things,” he added.

Gor coach Hassan Oktay has warned his players not to open the champagne yet.

“We still have so many games to play, we can’t celebrate yet but we are on course, the mentality is positive and everyone wants to fight for the team,” said the 46-year-old.

Gor, who beat Ulinzi Stars 2-1 on Monday, top the 18-team log on 58 points, nine ahead of closest-challengers Sofapaka after 25 rounds.

They need at least four wins to seal their 18th title.

Meanwhile, Oktay has tipped midfielder Kenneth Muguna for a national team call-up.

Muguna provided two assists in the team’s 2-0 win over Tusker last Saturday and has been instrumental in their run.

“He deserves to be in Harambee Stars, he is fantastic and can add something to the team,” offered Oktay.
