Gor face foreign quota dilemma

What you need to know:

  • Guikan, who was reportedly on his way out of the club, is back according to chairman Ambrose Rachier
  • Guikan's return means Gor now have four foreign strikers; Ssekisambu, Mustafa and their top scorer in the league last season Tuyisenge

  • Reports indicate that Gor might not renew Nizigiyimana's contract which expires in January

Gor Mahia have to drop one foreigner from their squad ahead of the 2018/19 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) season.

The record SPL champions have six foreigners within their ranks. However, Kenyan football rules require clubs to register a maximum of five.

Guikan, who was reportedly on his way out of the club, is back according to chairman Ambrose Rachier.

The 24-year-old had initially requested to leave on October 31 after falling out with former Gor coach Dylan Kerr.

However, Guikan - who joined Gor in January 2018 from Mauritian side AS Port Louis - made a U-turn following the resignation of Kerr on November 15.

“They never got along well with Kerr, so he made a request to leave and we accepted,” Rachier said on Monday.

"Actually he got a club in Algeria so we allowed him to go and that’s why we didn’t register him for Caf assignments. When he heard the coach (Kerr) has left, he said he wants back and he is now training with the team,” added the lawyer.

Guikan's return means Gor now have four foreign strikers; Ssekisambu, Mustafa and their top scorer in the league last season Tuyisenge. It is highly likely that this department could be targeted to arrive at the required number.

Mustafa joined the club in June on a two-year deal from Kiyovu Sports Club and grapevine is rife that he could be sent out loan with the club keen to hold on new signing Ssekisambu, Tuyisenge and Guikan who scored eight league goals last season.

Another player who could be sacrificed is fullback Nizigiyimana who spent majority of the 2018 season on the sidelines but has since recovered from a nasty ankle injury. Kenyan international Philemon Otieno, Wellington Ochieng' and Innocent Wafula can all play at right back further complicating Nizigiyimana's case. Reports indicate that Gor might not renew Nizigiyimana's contract which expires in January.

“We will decide, we have until January 4,” Rachier weighed in on the matter.

Interestingly Batambuze, Tuyisenge, Ssekisambu and Mustafa are in Gor's squad for the Caf Champions League while Nizigiyimana and Guikan were not registered.
