IN LONDON

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama is finally set to return to action on Sunday in Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup tie away to Crystal Palace.

Wanyama has been out of action since a recurrence of his knee injury in November but Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino says he hopes the Kenyan captain could return to action as soon as Sunday after returning to training this week.

The midfielder has made only seven appearances in all competitions this season and has not played since he last appeared for Tottenham coincidentally at Palace on November 10 last year.

“Victor has started to join the group,” Pochettino said. “We’ll see if it’s possible for him to be involved in the FA Cup at the weekend. It’s very good news for us.”

Tottenham have been badly affected by a spate of injuries to their key players including England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

The North London club have also been particularly left thin in midfield with the loss of Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier and the sale of Mousa Dembele.

Dier and Sissoko played in Tottenham’s Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea on penalties on Thursday and it is expected that Wanyama will start instead of Sissoko on Sunday after the Frenchman was forced off due to fatigue.

Despite his lack of action, Wanyama remains popular with the Tottenham fans and recently nearly 70 per cent said they wanted the Kenyan captain to stay at the club despite his injury problems according to a poll of its supporters.

The poll was made in the wake of transfer rumours about a possible return of Wanyama to the Scottish champions Celtic, Italian giants Roma or Championship side West Bromwich Albion.

Wanyama’s agent said that he will not be joining Serie A giants Roma´or any other club during the current transfer window.

“There is no possibility of Victor leaving Tottenham in January, but we’ll see after that,” agent Ivan Modia Yanez said.

Wanyama has made 78 appearances for the club since his switch from Southampton with 47 of those coming in his first season at the club.
