What you need to know:

  • Tickets were retailing for Sh100 and Sh1,000 for terraces and VIP respectively and the newly-refurbished Kasarani Stadium, which holds 60,000 people, was nearly full to the rafters on match day.
  • Such numbers have not been seen at the venue since July last year when the IAAF World Under-18 Athletics Championship was held at the facility.

A total of Sh3.6 million was realised in gate collection from Sunday’s friendly match between local champions Gor Mahia and English Championship side Hull City at the newly-refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

According to Gor officials, this was seven times higher than the amount of money realised from a Kenyan Premier League match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopard staged in Nakuru three weeks ago, and is among the highest amounts of money collected by K’Ogalo by way of gate collection in recent times.

Gor Mahia treasurer, Sally Bolo, Monday told Nation Sport that the Sh3.6 million realised on Sunday is the highest amount the club has realised she took office two years ago, and thanked the K’Ogalo fraternity for their support.

“In total, we sold 30, 000 tickets, and that includes both VIP and terrace tickets. I believe we could have sold more, but there were several complimentary tickets as well as several courtesy card holders who were allowed free access into the stadium.

“It is the highest amount we have recorded as a club this season, and it is definitely among the highest amounts of money the club has realised in a long time. I thank the Gor fans for the wonderful turn out and ask them to continue supporting the club with that same passion,” she said.

Gor Mahia’s match against Hull City was a promotional friendly match that was organised by online betting company SportPesa, who are the shirt sponsors for both teams.
