The County Government of Kakamega has approved requests from Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards, and newly-promoted Vihiga United FC to use Bukhungu Stadium for their home matches in the 2018 Kenyan Premier League season.

Apart from using the facility for their league matches, AFC Leopards will also use the 30,000-seater stadium for their Caf Confederation Cup matches.

This means Leopards will host Madagascar’s Fosa Juniors FC in the preliminaries of Caf Confederation Cup on February 10.

On Monday, Kakamega County Deputy Governor Prof Phillip Kutima disclosed that a delegation from the Confederation of Africa Football inspected the stadium last week and declared it fit to host the match between AFC Leopards and Fosa Juniors.

Kutima was speaking at Bukhungu Stadium after signing an agreement with Vihiga County Deputy Governor Dr Patrick Saisi, allowing Kenyan Premier League debutantes Vihiga United FC to use the facility for its home matches.

Saisi led a delegation from Vihiga County Government on a tour of the facility on Monday. They included Vihiga County of Sports Chief Officer Anne Sudi, Vihiga United Organising Secretary Everlyn Sudi and the county’s Public Relations Officer Peter Atsiaya.

Saisi thanked the County Government of Kakamega for allowing their team to use the Bukhungu Stadium as their home ground while featuring in the top-tier football league.

“The stadium is fantastic. It meets international standards,, which is good for us,” Saisi said.

Kutima said delegations from Embu, Kitui, Homa Bay and Uasin Gishu counties had toured the stadium to learn from Kakamega’s experience to enable them build a similar facility in their areas.

“We have received many requests from football clubs seeking permission to use Bukhungu Stadium as their home ground. We are still assessing the situation to see if we can allow more teams to use the facility,” he noted.

Last month, Bukhungu Stadium hosted Group “B” matches of the 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
