Sharks, Mathare share spoils in Slum Derby

Mathare United and Kariobangi Sharks battled to a goalless draw in SportPesa Premier League at Kasarani stadium on Wednesday.

The second draw between the two sides in five meetings leaves Mathare top on 24 points.

The first half was saw frenetic action from both sides.
David Owino latched onto a well calculated through pass from Cliff Nyakeya on 13th minute but his ferocious left foot shot from a tight angle hit the upright.

Two minutes later, Nyakeya headed wide a James Kinyanjui weighted cross on as Sharks sat deep waiting to break on the counter.

Sharks won a free kick in a promising position on 23rd minute after Andrew Juma fouled George Abege. Patillah Omoto teed up the Ugandan striker from the set piece but his low shot deflected off his teammate to sail into the net only to be chalked off the scoreboard by assistant referee’s flag.

Duke Abuya's header from a Vincent Wasambo cross on 41 minutes hit the upright and three minutes later, Abuya unleashed a thunderbolt that cannoned off the crossbar after being fed by Abege who had beaten the offside trap.

On the other end, Mathare wasted a chance to take the lead through Chris Oduor whose attempt from a rebound was saved by John Oyemba in Sharks goal.

Sharks suffered an injury blow when Harrison Mwendwa limped off after 56 minutes with James Mazembe replacing him.

Mathare deployed a high line defence in the second half making it difficult for Sharks who were caught offside on several occasions. Nixon Omondi's header from a Patillah Omoto well curled in cross veered off the mark three minutes into stoppage time.

The draw sees Sharks, fresh from their SportPesa Cup heroics in Dar es Salaam, remain 5th with 15 points
