Newly formed Kisumu All Stars and St Joseph Youth from Nakuru on Saturday batled to a barren draw in their opening match of the 2018 National Super League season at Moi stadium in Kisumu.

As they had promised during the official launch of the newly formed club on Friday, Kisumu County officials led by the deputy governor Mathew Owili, showed up in the stadium to support the home team.

The draw came as a disappointment to head coach Nick Aketch and his players who were eager to start their campaign with a win.

"It not a very good result because we think we ought to have done better than this to make our supporters more happy. We made unnecessary mistakes which cost us," said Aketch.

All Stars looked set to take all the three points early on with St Joseph's goalkeeper Martin Lule being forced to come out of his line just six minutes into the match to deny forward Geoffrey Alwasa a chance to give his side the lead.

However, as the game progressed, the hosts slowed down the tempo, much to the disappointment of the handful of fans who had showed up at the stadium to support the home team.

Five minutes to halftime, the visitors wasted a glorious opportunity to snatch the lead when Thomas Jaji was brought down inside the box but he fired wide from the spot.

St Joseph's midfielder Martin Oduor threated All Stars with a powerful shot from outside the box but goalkeeper Robert Owiti stood his ground to clear it out for a fruitless corner kick.

The host could have taken the lead on 71 minutes but substitute Solomon Onunga fired wide from close range.
