Liverpool will no longer seek to utilise the UK government's furlough coronavirus aid scheme, the club announced Monday.

The Premier League leaders, who declared a pre-tax profit of £42 million ($51.7 million) in February, faced a storm of criticism after announcing Saturday they intended applying for state funds to help pay staff wages.

But Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore said Monday: "We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week to announce that we intended to apply to the Coronavirus Retention Scheme and furlough staff due to the suspension of the Premier League football calendar, and are truly sorry for that."
