What you need to know:

  • The 'Slum Boys' are now on 20 points, dislodging champions Gor Mahia (19points) from the summit.
  • Clearly favourites in this tie, Mathare enjoyed possession in the opponents final third in the run up to the opening goal.
  • Then Daniel Mwaura sprayed a pass out wide to Clifton Aluwanga on the right flank.

Mathare United look a more polished outfit this season, judging from their current standing at the top of the Kenyan Premier league table, and performances in Wednesday's 3-2 triumph over Nakumatt at Ruaraka grounds, Nairobi.

Red-hot Clifton Nyakeya scored the opener for the 'Slum Boys', his fifth of the season in this competition, only after two minutes.

Donald Mosoti meanwhile scored twice for struggling Nakumatt in either half, with both goals coming from the penalty spot.

But Mathare eventually outscored the opposition, with yet another penalty kick, while Clifford Alwanga also got on the scoresheet for the victors with the fourth goal of the game on 57 minutes to hand a relaxed Mathare coach Francis Kimanzi his fifth win in eight league outings thus far.

Clearly favourites in this tie, Mathare enjoyed possession in the opponents final third in the run up to the opening goal.

Then Daniel Mwaura sprayed a pass out wide to Clifton Alwanga on the right flank.

The experienced forward would in turn pick his strike partner with a lofty cross and Nyakeya responded by measuring a connecting shot into the roof of the net.

Nakumatt picked themselves up and restored parity with a comical penalty 20 minutes later.

Initially, Bonface Mukele went down in the box after a challenge and while taking the resultant spot kick from 12 yards, burly centre back Donald Mosoti stepped back about 15 steps, and followed that up by pacing in a zigzag manner in his build up.

With almost everyone surely wondering what the former Gor Mahia defender was upto, he responded by placing a left footed shot past the stretching arms of Mathare goalie Robert Mboya and into the back of the yellow net.

That's as far as Nakumatt would go in challenging their opponents on the day however, as Kevin Omondi's successful 47th minute penalty for Mathare was more of the straight forward stuff we are used to.

Seizing the initiative after George Owino had been brought in the box following a tussle while attacking a corner kick, Omondi struck a low hard shot that gave the opposing custodian no chance.

Alwanga, who has since formed an exciting attacking partnership with Omondi and Nyakeya since joining Mathare from Tusker at the start of this season, went on to attempt a goal bound shot similar to the bicycle kick goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo against Juventus in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday night.

Unlike the Portuguese striker however, the experienced Kenyan's shot was safely gathered.

Still probing, Alwanga went on to fire home the third from Nyakeya in almost similar fashion to the opening goal of the game. There was still time for Mosoti to increase on his tally.
