Mathare United hit Tusker to stretch lead

What you need to know:

  • The 'Slum Boys', who had a bright start in the game, broke the deadlock a minute to the breather through Mwangi, who headed home from a goal mouth melee, after Tusker defenders failed to stop Cliff Nyakeya cross from the left flank.
  • The 2008 champions stretch their lead at the top of the standings to 23 points from 10 matches, while Tusker remain on nine points with a game in hand.
  • This, however is Mathare’s fourth win against the brewers in 19 league matches. Mathare last beat Tusker in July 2015 at the City Stadium with current Mathare coach Francis Kimanzi handling the Brewers then.

John Mwangi’s strike at the close of halftime is all Mathare United needed to beat Tusker 1-0 in a Kenyan Premier League match played at Ruaraka grounds, Nairobi on Sunday.

The win saw Mathare end a three-year winless streak against the eleven-time Kenyan Premier League champions and extended their lead at the top to 23 points.

Tusker had won and drew seven times against Mathare, this being their fourth defeat against the Slum Boys.

Mwangi was a constant menace in the tie that turned physical in the early exchanges. His shot in the 36th minute was parried by David Okello in the Tusker goal resulting in a fruitless corner.

Edwin Seda splashed a golden opportunity a minute later, instead of burying the ball in an empty net after Okello left his line, he chose to pass to Cliff Nyakeya on the far left, whose well curled shot was picked by Okello.

Just before the goal, David Owino lost his marker, but Clifford Alwanga failed to convert his dangerous cross.

Timothy Otieno, who started upfront with Edwin Lavatsa, hardly got past the Mathare defence led by veteran George “Wise” Owino.

The former Gor Mahia man Otieno’s teasing cross two minutes after restart was cleared by Johnston Omurwa denying Lavatsa a goal scoring opportunity.

Mathare visit Posta Rangers in their next league match, while Tusker play Vihiga United.
