Mathare check K’Ogalo’s progress in campaign

What you need to know:

  • Nakumatt FC, which will be renamed Mount Kenya United Football Club, have managed a single win in the season and are bottom of the log with seven points.
  • Coach Robert Matano who is two-time league champion with two different clubs, believes Tusker can rise up the table of standings should the brewers maintain a winning mentality.

Mathare United on Sunday showed the clearest signal yet of their title intentions by condemning 16-time champions Gor Mahia to a 2-2 draw in a SportPesa Premier League match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos at the weekend.

In a weekend in which 20 goals were scored in seven fixtures, it was the 2008 champions’ fighting spirit that culminated in Clifford Alwanga’s equaliser that reduced the gap between the two sides to three points.

Coach Francis Kimanzi’s Mathare are second in the league with 24 points, while Gor top the standings on 27 albeit with two games in hand, but Mathare have shown they can swim with the big boys, with just 13 rounds of matches into the season.

“If you get a point from a team you are close to on the log, then you have to appreciate that because we are also where we are on the table on merit,” Kimanzi said on Sunday in his post-match interview.

The match saw Mathare end a two-match winless run, while Gor made it two draws on the trot.

“This was a game for any side would have got all three points on offer, and it would show who is more superior between the two teams. However, one point shows that we also have the belief,” the former Sofapaka and Tusker coach said.

Elsewhere, Ken Odhiambo’s Bandari moved to third place with a 2-1 win over Nakumatt, who despite changing ownership early in the month, have struggled to collect points in two consecutive games.

Nakumatt FC, which will be renamed Mount Kenya United Football Club, have managed a single win in the season and are bottom of the log with seven points.

Coach Robert Matano who is two-time league champion with two different clubs, believes Tusker can rise up the table of standings should the brewers maintain a winning mentality.

“We are coming up so well and I want urge the boys to do more so that we can be where we rightly deserve to be on the table of standings,” Matano, who has collected six points in two games over four days, said.

The 11-time KPL champions sit 13th on the table with 16 points, same as Kariobangi Sharks.
