Olunga attracts big-money interest from China

What you need to know:

  • Should the two clubs strike a deal, Olunga is expected to be sold for around €40million (about Sh4.4 billion).
  • Nigerian international John Obi Mikel, Argentine Carlos Tevez and Brazilian Oscar have all moved East lured by big money.

Harambee Stars lead striker and IF Djurgardens attacker Michael Olunga could soon be leaving the Swedish Premier League, where he plies his trade, for greener pastures in the lucrative Chinese Super League.

The towering Olunga, a crowd favourite with Gor Mahia in 2015, joined the Swedish club at the beginning of last season, and had a remarkable campaign, banging 12 league goals. According to a Swedish site, www.expressen.se, newly promoted Chinese side Hengfeng Guizhou Zhicheng and Russian giants CSKA Moscow are among the clubs interested in landing his signature.

Should the two clubs strike a deal, Olunga is expected to be sold for around €40million (about Sh4.4 billion).

This figure would dwarf the Sh2.7 billion which Southampton paid to Celtic in 2013 to secure the services of Victor Wanyama, currently with Tottenham Hotspur.

“I cannot confirm anything except that if Olunga is sold it will be the most expensive deal from a Stockholm club ever,” Olunga’s agent Patrick Dark told the Espressen.

The Chinese league has been on spending spree luring several big names like Carlos Tevez of Argentina to their league in a bid to raise its profile.
