The freshly-revamped Nation Media Group Football Club is among teams that have confirmed their participation in next month’s Standard Chartered Trophy.
The tournament’s winners will bag a trip to 18-time English Premier League champions Liverpool’s Anfield ground for a global tournament sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank who are also Liverpool’s shirt sponsors.
The Nairobi tournament, dubbed “Road to Anfield” will involve 36 teams that will compete in a one-day, five-a-side tournament on March 10 at St Mary’s School in Nairobi whose winners earn a four-day, expenses-paid trip.
While in Merseyside, the team will represent Kenya at the worldwide Standard Chartered Trophy finals to be staged at the 54,074-seater Anfield stadium on May 17.
In addition, they will also have the privilege to attend an English Premier League match at the iconic stadium as well as benefit from a professional training session with the “Reds” legends and coaches.
“This has been one of the most successful tournaments we’ve held for the last five years. It’s an opportunity for us to invite our clients and media partners to participate in this exciting tourney for a chance to play other teams globally,” said Lamine Manjang, the Standard Chartered Bank Kenya and East Africa CEO at Tuesday’s launch.
Nation Media Group FC toured Mombasa last month where they held a Mombasa Media Combined team to a 3-3 draw before falling 3-2 to a Mombasa County Government side.
“The good thing is that over the last five years, we’ve had the fortune of a Kenyan team (Capital FM) win the global trophy at Anfield in 2015. We look forward to a fan-filled event and that in 2018 a Kenyan team will win it again,” he added.
Last year, Kenyan winners, Capital FM, fell to Tanzania’s Anzania in the regional final in Dar es salaam, but a change in format will see each country have a representative at Anfield.
