Nation FC wins StarTimes Inter Media 'World Cup'

A second half goal by Eric Musungu was all Nation Media Group needed to beat arch-rivals Standard Group 1-0 to win the StarTimes Inter Media Football "World Cup" at Upper Hill School on Saturday.

Musungu, a utility player, rammed home a hard shot with five minutes left on the clock to hand Nation FC the win in the tournament organised as a curtain raiser to the World Cup that kicks off on June 14 in Russia.

On the way to the final, Nation FC emerged from their group with a 3-0 win over Kass Media and two draws against Qwetu FM (1-1) and Freelancers (2-2).

In the quarter-final, Musungu's two goals saw Nation FC beat Homeboyz Radio 2-0 while in the semi-final, Musungu was on target again with captain Allan Munga making it 2-0 over Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

Nation FC's Eric Isinta, a cameraman with NTV, was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player with Nation FC handed the winners' Sh100,000 cash by StarTimes' marketing manager Japheth Akhulia.

The tournament was organised in conjunction with the Sports Journalists' Association of Kenya (SJAK).

"This is a fitting reward for the hard work we have put in since the team started training in February this year. Training together has been good team building for NMG employees and a morale booster," Nation FC team manager Elias Makori said after the game.
