Newcomers Wazito sink Nakumatt

A goal in either half from Joe Waithira and Kenneth Wendo helped Wazito to a 2-0 win over struggling Nakumatt in a Kenyan Premier League match played at Camp Toyoyo grounds on Sunday.

Waithira weaved through Nakumatt defenders to chip an onrushing Nakumatt goalkeeper Frankline Mwenda for the opener. The Harambee Stars trialist turned provider for Wendo seven minutes to full time.

Victory takes Wazito's point tally to seven, two ahead of Nakumatt after seven rounds.

"We played well surprisingly from a team that doesn't train consistently. These players have resorted to personal training from their homes due to financial challenges, " Nakumatt coach Anthony Mwangi told Nation Sport after the game.

"Had we utilized our chances the scoreboard would have been different. We missed a penalty and conceded an easy goal thereafter, " he added.

His Wazito counterpart Frank Ouna was delighted with the win, their second on their debut season in the top flight.

"We went all out for a win and ultimately it paid off. The only weakness I have to work on is the backline because today we were not that perfect but I am happy with my boys. They are gaining experience with more matches we play, " he said.

Ouna benched veteran defender Mark Odhiambo for the first time this season, but later introduced him at the hour mark. He was the culprit of the awarded penalty seven minutes to full time after bringing down Wanyonyi.

The former Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards midfielder Timonah Wanyonyi had various chances at goal in the first half but none hit the back of the net.

Phillip Odhiambo was called into action the better part of the opening stanza to stop Nakumatt’s raids.

Brian Nyakan won a free kick in the 52nd minute after being brought down at the edge of the box by Luis Tumba, but John Njoroge’s resultant free kick was blocked.
