A teacher was among two lucky football fans who won the jackpot by the sports betting firm SportPesa on Wednesday.

Dolphine Awuor and Albert Maraga each won Sh2.08 million after making 11 out of 13 correct predictions for last week’s round of matches across the major football leagues in the world.

Awuor, a Nairobi-based teacher, said she was introduced to betting by her husband. The Gor Mahia and Chelsea fan made three bets, spending Sh300.

“I am happy that I have won,” Awuor said. “My parents died when I was young and life has never been the same again.

“My passion for football has always been there. I recall a time when I almost failed my examination at the teachers college because my attention was glued to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.”

She plans to use the money to educate her two siblings and also uplift the living standards of her foster parents.

Maraga, 33, from Bomet, has been betting for four months and won the jackpot at the 13th attempt. He said he will use the money to educate his three children and venture into business.
