Venue hitch for Gor matches

What you need to know:

  • USM Alger are the Group D leaders, having beaten Young Africans of Tanzania 3-0 at the weekend, and are scheduled to face K’Ogalo on Wednesday next week in a match that will heavily impact on both teams’ chances of proceeding to the tournament’s next stage.
  • Gor’s 1-1 away draw with Rayon Sports on Sunday leaves them second in the Group behind USM Alger, making next week’s match key for the 16-time Kenya champions if they are to conserve their hopes of making it to the quarter-finals.

The venue for Caf Champions League Group ‘D’ match between Gor Mahia and Algeria’s USM Alger on May 16 is yet to be determined as officials wait for confirmation of availability of Kasarani Stadium currently under renovation.

At the same time, Gor fans have reacted angrily to goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch’s performance against Rayon Sports on Sunday night which allowed the hosts to equalise for a 1-1 draw at Nyamirambo Stadium in Kigali.

Regarding the venue for their match against Alger, Gor’s assistant secretary general Ronald Ngala said Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos has been earmarked as a tentative venue for the match despite concerns about the state of the playing surface.

“We are still waiting for communication from Caf and we should get it before tomorrow. Machakos has been put as a tentative host for the game as we wait to confirm whether Kasarani will be ready by next week,” he said.

Against Rayon Sports, first choice goalkeeper Oluoch was casually beaten by whatappeared a harmless free-kick from Erick Rutanda in the 24th minute.

Pundits opine that Oluoch, who has been guilty of conceding similar goals in the past, arranged his defensive wall poorly and stood right behind his players, thereby blocking his view of the ball, and Rutanda cancelled out Meddie Kagere’s earlier goal.
