Zoo Kericho tactician Sammy Okoth was on Friday unveiled as new coach of Vihiga United.

This follows the sacking of Mike Mururi and his two assistants; Tom Terra and Francis Xavier, over dismal performance on Wednesday.

Vihiga club president Kahi Indimuli unveiled Okoth at the Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County on Friday afternoon.

He will be assisted by Alex Lusiola, who is currently coaching their sister team, Vihiga Queens.

While unveiling the new coach in the presence of the club's 30 players, Indimuli said this is a caretaker technical team that is expected to lead the side out of relegation.

He said the team, which is currently at position 16 out of 18 in the log, needs to fight for survival.

"We have decided that we don't want to be relegated. From the 10 remaining matches, we have 30 points to pick. If you give us 25 points, we will celebrate and survive relegation," said Indimuli.

He urged the players to focus on their game and avoid any distractions.

"It is a moment of reflection for our team. The burden is on us. We want the team to prosper. We took the decision to sack the coach and his assistants after the bitter loss to Zoo," Indimuli said.

"It was a painful decision. Remember we had lost six other matches in a row. We were forced to take the step."

Okoth said he was confident he could help the club avoid the chop.

"I am not coming with anything special to offer. I have watched some of your games and I know you have the capacity to win," he said.

Indimuli asked the players to accord the new team with support, saying there were no miracles in winning football matches.

He also unveiled three new goalkeepers; Patient Ndikomu from Black Eagles FC in Burundi, Caleb Wamalwa from Vihiga Bullets FC and Opiyo Lewis from Posta Rangers FC.
