What you need to know:

  • Both teams created scoring chances in vain with Sharks retaining the same squad that crashed 4-1 to Ulinzi Stars in a SportPesa Shield semifinal last Sunday.
  • George Abege combined with Eric Kapaito three minutes before the break but the latter missed the target by a whisker despite rounding Wazito custodian Martin Musalia.

Debutantes Wazito fell 2-1 to Kariobangi Sharks worsening their survival in the SportPesa Premier League in a midweek match played at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Wednesday.

Sharks' Shaphan Oyugi drew the first blood heading home Bolton Omwenga’s curved cross on 24 minutes, but substitute Edwin Lavatsa levelled with a curling shot 15 minutes to time.

However, a last minute beauty from Harrison Mwendwa left Wazito dejected.

To evade the axe, Wazito, who played to a thrilling 3-3 draw with Zoo Kericho last weekend, will have to win their remaining two matches against Bandari (home) and the last match away to Sony Sugar and hope other results go their way.

“We are not yet relegated so we will continue fighting on. Things worsened when we lost 18 players in June,” said an optimistic Wazito coach Frank Ouna.

His Sharks counterpart William Muluya was pleased with the fighting spirit his boys put in until the end.

“At some point we lost footing but we are happy we emerged victors,” he said.

Sharks visit Vihiga United as Wazito hosts Bandari in Nairobi on Sunday.

At Kasarani stadium, a spirited Mathare United saw off struggling Posta Rangers 1-0 thanks to Clifford Alwanga’s stunning half volley four minutes to time.

Bernard Odhiambo’s strike is all Zoo Kericho needed to gun down Ulinzi Stars 1-0 at the Kericho Green Stadium.
