The battle for National Super League (NSL) title intensified at the weekend, with Western Stima finishing the first leg matches on top of the league standings.

Stima lead the 19-team log with 36 points but the Kisumu-based team is the only side that has played 18 first leg matches. The remaining teams have a game or two in hand.

“I wanted to finish the first round matches on top of the log, and by a big gap but football being what it’s, that (four-point margin) is what we could manage. Now we plan for the second leg,” Stima coach Richard Makumbi said on Monday.

Second-placed Ushuru have 32 points, Nairobi Stima are third on 31 while fourth and fifth places are shared by Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Kibera Black Stars, both on 30 points but the bankers have a superior goal difference.

Western Stima held Talanta 1-1 at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Nairobi at the weekend, while Nairobi Stima stunned KCB 2-1 in Naivasha during a weekend that produced 24 goals from nine fixtures.

St Joseph’s Youth had the biggest margin of score, whipping visiting Kangemi All Stars 4-1 at Afraha Stadium as Coast Stima handed Kenya Police their third defeat with a 3-1 result in Mombasa.

On Sunday, Ushuru edged Bidco United 1-0 at Thika Sub-county Stadium.
