What you need to know:

  • In this case, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will be obliged to pay the fine as Timbe serves his ban effective September 7 when Kenya hosts the Black Stars of Ghana.
  • He will also miss matches against Ethiopia in October and coincidentally return when Stars host Sierra Leone on November 16.

Harambee Stars coach Sebastian Migne will do without the services of winger Ayub Timbe in the next three 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers following his three-match suspension by the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Timbe, who plays for Chinese second-tier side Lava Springs, is reported to have accosted Nigerian referee Ferdinand Udoh after Kenya’s 2-1 loss to Sierra Leone in the 2019 Afcon Group “F” qualifier staged at the Steven Siaka stadium on June 10, 2017.

In a meeting held in Cairo on October 5, 2017, the continental football body’s disciplinary board chaired by South African Raymond Hack found the 25-year-old guilty based on the filed match officials’ report thus invoking Article 82 of Caf Disciplinary code to fine him USD10 000 (approximately Shs1 million) plus a three-match ban.

“National associations, clubs, officials and members as well as their players shall respect the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship,” reads Article 82, while Article 83 holds associations responsible in case of disrepute.

In this case, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will be obliged to pay the fine as Timbe serves his ban effective September 7 when Kenya hosts the Black Stars of Ghana.

He will also miss matches against Ethiopia in October and coincidentally return when Stars host Sierra Leone on November 16.

Timbe has since said he will not appeal the decision whilst wishing Stars the best in the upcoming assignments.

“As much as I don’t agree with the verdict, I respect the decision by Caf and won’t be appealing against it,” he was quoted saying on the FKF portal.

“I am disappointed that I won’t play in the upcoming three Afcon qualifiers. As a player, I’ve always endeavoured to adhere to the laws of the game, both off and on the pitch and it pains me to be denied the chance to represent my country especially at this crucial period when we are trying to qualify for Afcon,” he concluded.

Kenya is pointless in the group sitting third behind Ghana and Sierra Leone.
