What you need to know:

  • This weekend, a field of 244 has been drawn and will be up and about from as early as 7.22am in the hunt of the top prize in this popular golf series.

It is again a battle between the low and high handicappers at Sigona, as the par 72 course host the eighth leg of the Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve series this weekend, just a week after the Bidco Classic.

This weekend, a field of 244 has been drawn and will be up and about from as early as 7.22am in the hunt of the top prize in this popular golf series.

At last weekend’s Bidco Classic, Nitin Shah Jogoo, playing off handicap six, rolled in four birdies, two in the first two holes and the others coming late on the 15th and 16th for two over par 41 points to claim the overall title.

Considering recent form, Jogoo, will definitely be one of the low figure handicap players to watch. Others will include Imran Nanji, who like Jogoo, made four birdies though a double bogey at the 16th saw him finish in second place, a point adrift the winner.

Finishing with impressive scores though they missed out in the prize list were players like Sandeep Matharu who carded 38 and Vicky Chawla, Michael Njoroge and Flavian Mwangi all of whom posted 37 points.

It will be interesting to see how they fair tomorrow while leading those in the double figure handicap category will be Taher Shah who carded 39 points last weekend.

Things did not work well on youngster Adam Tayebjee who fired 34 points, but who knows, it may be his turn this weekend.

Once again East African Breweries will be selling its top whisky brands at discounted prices.

Away at Ruiru, club captain Peter Mwaura says he is all set to host the first leg of the “Road to the KCB Karen Masters" series sponsored by Kenya Commercial Bank.

A big field of 160 players are drawn to play.

The par 72 Ruiru course is currently in its best condition thanks to the rains though the rough has grown which means one must stay on the fairway to enjoy a good round of golf.

Mwaura thanked KCB for choosing Ruiru to launch their series. “We feel greatly honoured to host the first leg of the series and we are sincerely grateful to KCB," said Mwaura.

And having fired 39 points last weekend, Ben Omondi, the club’s top amateur, will be the man to beat.

The top lady golfers are, meanwhile, at Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club for the Ladies Open sponsored by Tatu City.

GACHAGA IN THE MIX

Title contenders include Dubai-based Kellie Gachaga who last weekend made a come back in the local scene by claiming the Laxcon Sika junior title at Muthaiga Golf Club after posting 37 points playing off handicap five.

At Windsor, Gachaga will face Rose Naliaka Academy’s players Ashley Awour and Serah Khanyereri.

Senior players the likes of Wanjiru Karume, Florence Maina and Nakuru’s Esther Karuga will be in action.

In Nyahururu, a field of 150 was drawn for the Thika Motor Dealers including a number of players from Thika, Njoro, Nanyuki, Nyeri and Gilgil.

The course in Nyahururu is also reported to be in great condition and all set to host the big event.
