Nyanza Golf Club’s David Odhiambo was in his best form during Tuesday’s second round of this year’s PGK Masters at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course.
Odhiambo, who missed the five legs of the Kenya Open qualifying series, fired a bogey-free seven under 64, for a two rounds total of 10 under par 132.
Odhiambo now leads home pro Jeff Kubwa by eight shots after hitting birdies at the second, fourth, sixth in the first nine and 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th.
“My game is solid at the moment because I have been practising back home almost on daily basis because I really want to qualify for the Open," said Odhiambo after his brilliant round.
He said he could not play in the first events because it was going to be expensive and particularly with no prize money. He had fired three under par 68 in Monday’s first round where he picked up four birdies and one bogey.
Kubwa on the other hand fired one under par 70 for a two round total of 140. His second round included a birdie at the fourth hole and 17 pars, to tie with Sigona’s Mohit Mediratta who birdied the third, fourth, 10th, 15th and 18th with two bogeys coming on the ninth and 11th for the second round’s three under par 68.
Another Muthaiga player Greg Snow - who has already qualified - shot one under par 70 to tie with Sigona’s Sujan Shah and John Wangai on 142 each.
David Wakhu finished the round on 143 after two over par 73 in the second round. Wakhu, who along with Wangai have already booked their slots in the open, had started with one under par.
Of the four amateurs, who are also preparing for the Open, Tanzania’s Victor Joseph shot was a shot better than Edwin Mudanyi after rounds of 72 and 76 while Mudanyi carded 75 and 74. The other two amateurs, Daniel Nduva shot two over par 73, a four shots improvement from the first round while Dennis Saikwa was on 155 after rounds of 77 and 78.
