What you need to know:

  • The long-hitting Indiza has already booked a place in the Open by virtue of having made the cut last year.
  • He rolled in a total of six birdies five of them in a row from the fifth to the ninth and dropped his only shot of the day at the 15th, to win the event with a 72-hole total of 10 under par 278.
  • Day Three leader Nelson Simwa dropped to third place on 285 after posting four over par 76 in the event sponsored by former Muthaiga Golf Club chairman Edwin Kinyua.

Mumias-based Dismas Indiza fired his way to four shots victory after an excellent five under par 67 in the closing round of the Kenya Open qualifying event at Sigona Golf Club on Thursday.

The long-hitting Indiza, who has already booked a place in the Open by virtue of having made the cut last year, rolled in a total of six birdies five of them in a row from the fifth to the ninth and dropped his only shot of the day at the 15th, to win the event with a 72-hole total of 10 under par 278.

He had started the day with a birdie at the very first hole which seemed to have triggered the rest and a well deserved victory for the pro who is using the events as build up for the Open.

Birdies were however elusive for Kopan Timbe who only made two for the day but against three bogeys at the second, 16th and 18th for one over par 73 to finish second overall on five under par 282.

DROPPED TO THIRD

Day Three leader Nelson Simwa dropped to third place on 285 after posting four over par 76 in the event sponsored by former Muthaiga Golf Club chairman Edwin Kinyua.

“We are most grateful to (Edwin) Kinyua for coming out and to support us. We need this kind of support more than any other time since we did not have enough events to play for last year," said Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) captain John Wangai who appealed for more support particularly in the remaining events.

The third leg of the five-events series organised to select 18 pros who will join four others for this year’s open, will take place at Windsor from February 12-15 before action switches to Royal Nairobi Golf Club from February 26 to March 1.
