Fabulous prizes lined up for Jamhuri Day golf tournament

Over a dozen prizes will be up for grabs at the nine-hole Kiambu Golf Club course which is the venue for the Jamhuri Day golf tournament.

Wednesday's event, which comes just five days after last weekend’s successful “Friends from Sigona” golf tournament won by Paul Muigai with nett 73, has attracted a field of 114 golfers who are expected to be up as early as 7.44am. It is being sponsored by two-time (2001 and 2005) Lady Captain of the club Mary Mungai who has supported many events at the club before.

This particular event is however very important for Mungai as it will be on her birthday. “I thought I should celebrate my birthday with all the good friends in the golfing circle instead of spending it in the house,’’ said Mungai.

With the on-going rains, the par 72 Kiambu course is once again likely to be playing long, a condition which is likely to favour those who are able to give the ball a maximum carry. Going for the top prize and the Jamhuri Day trophy, will be among others, Paul Muigai, Geoffrey Manguriu, David Kimani and Paul Murumba all of whom played well at the weekend.

Also drawn will be Samuel Kamau Macharia and his four ball of M.K. Wanjohi, Maina Njakwe and David Ndirangu, as well as Larry Njue and Paul Kaumbutho. There are four main prizes for the men members, two for ladies and three reserved for guests.

Among the ladies who will be battling it out include Wanjiru Karume who clinched the ladies prize last weekend with a score of nett 74. She won by a shot from one of the leading lady golfers in the country Joyce Wanjiru who is also drawn on Wednesday.

Those going for the prizes reserved for Mungai’s guests include Soy Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany, Adelbert Omooria and Paul Orawo all from Kenya Railway Golf Club. Because of the large field, the captain has asked players to strictly adhere to their draws.
