Snow freezes opponents to take lead at Windsor

What you need to know:

  • Snow made a total of five birdies in the third round but against a similar number of bogeys.
  • He dropped a shot at the par four-first hole, pulled one back at the third, but bogeyed the fourth and seventh, recovered one at the ninth, to cross to the back nine with one over par.

Muthaiga’s Greg Snow finally claimed the top position going into Thursday’s final round of the Kenya Open qualifier’s fifth leg at the par 72 Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club course on Wednesday.

It was however a day of birdies and bogeys as Snow made a total of five birdies in the third round but against a similar number of bogeys.

He dropped a shot at the par four-first hole, pulled one back at the third, but bogeyed the fourth and seventh, recovered one at the ninth, to cross to the back nine with one over par.

He fired two back-to-back birdies from the 11th to the 12th and added one at the 15th, though Snow dropped two successive shots from the 16th for a level par 72 and a three rounds total of four under par 212 to lead by the narrow margin of one shot from home pro Riz Charania who carded two over par 74 for 213.

Birdies became so elusive for the Windsor resident pro Charania and bogeyed the 13th and 17th and parred the rest of the holes.

Golf Park’s Jacob Okello moved to third place after an impressive three under par 69 to close the day on 219.

Okello was heading for a five under par until he picked up a double bogey at the par four-18th hole. Had birdied the sixth in the first nine though it was at the back nine where Okello managed to produce his very best with birdies on the 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th.

Also making a move to the top four was Thika Sports Club’s Simon Ngige who recovered from a poor first round of eight over par 80 and a 77 in the second round, to post an excellent seven under par 65 in the third round for a total of six over par 222.

Ngige’s round included two eagles on the fifth and 15th and birdies on the first, third, 10th, 12th and 15th with two bogeys over the fourth and 17th.
